Prevention

Because the intestines naturally react to stress, one of the best ways to prevent symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome is to manage stress effectively. A number of methods (e.g., formal counseling, medications, hypnosis, biofeedback, relaxation techniques, deep breathing, yoga, exercise) may be helpful. In some cases, simply taking time to enjoy life each day can reduce IBS symptoms.

It may be helpful for patients with IBS to keep a diary of symptoms to help identify possible triggers for the condition. Once IBS triggers are identified, they should be avoided and eliminated. For example, if chocolate worsens symptoms, it can be removed from the diet. It may take some time to develop a plan that reduces symptoms significantly.
