Treatment

In most cases, vomiting does not require treatment and resolves once the cause is eliminated. Treatment may include extra fluids and electrolytes (administered orally or through a vein [IV]) and anti-nausea medications (called antiemetics).

Complications include breathing stomach contents into the lungs (aspiration). In severe cases, vomiting can cause excessive fluid loss (dehydration), GI bleeding (e.g., from the stomach or esophagus), and broken blood vessels (e.g., in the eyes or face). Patients who experience severe pain, vomit blood, or are unable to keep liquids down for longer than eight hours should contact a health care provider.
